Our context

Most of our free-time in the Nordics takes place in dark weather. How we connect with others, how we decide to go out or stay in, and how we go about life after-duty is very influenced by cold temperatures and little day-light.

Our knowledge about how people cope with those conditions, how night-time actors try to keep life after-dark social, and how researchers could study the night to inform policy and action is very limited.

The Nordic Nights Network is being built to be the platform where doers, researchers, enthusiasts, and decision-makers explore across many night-time ecosystems with the goal of creating knowledge that connects people and projects that change the way we talk, do, and live by night.

Three founding projects

These projects are the founding partners of the NNN

Night-Time Boost

Night-Time Boost Hafnar.haus, C-Cube, Hyper Island & Studenterhus Aarhus

NTB is an Erasmus+ project created to strengthen youth-led night-time culture in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. Led by Hafnar.haus, it supports young people through participatory research, training, project-making labs, and collaboration with cultural hubs, student organisations, venues, and local stakeholders.

The project also works to build long-term legitimacy for night-time culture as a space for inclusion, wellbeing, participation, and social innovation. By training 45 young people and supporting up to nine prototypes across Reykjavík, Aarhus, and Stockholm, Night-Time Boost offers a strong reference for the Nordic Nights Network as a project connecting night-time culture, youth participation, cross-sector collaboration, and local civic life.

Helsinki After Dark

Helsinki After Dark Nightshift Finland

Helsinki After Dark is Finland’s first cultural project dedicated to evening and nightlife development. Led by Nightshift Finland, it supports Helsinki’s grassroots cultural producers, artists, collectives, freelancers, and nightlife entrepreneurs, especially those working outside traditional funding structures.

Through mentoring, network-building, international exchange, and data-driven research, the project addresses key challenges such as rising costs, lack of event spaces, noise conflicts, safety, mobility, and the cultural and economic value of nightlife. For the Nordic Nights Network, it is a strong reference because it frames nightlife as cultural infrastructure, grassroots entrepreneurship, and a vital part of urban and civic life.

PULSE

PULSE STPLN

PULSE is a three-year project funded by the Swedish Inheritance Fund, created to strengthen and make Malmö’s club culture more visible. Led by STPLN, it supports young creative collectives aged 18–25 through training, networking, access to venues, technical infrastructure, and practical resources for producing events.

The project also works to build long-term legitimacy for club culture as part of Malmö’s cultural life. Through advocacy and a youth-led study on safety, accessibility, marginalised communities, and residents’ relationship with nightlife, PULSE offers a strong reference for the Nordic Nights Network as a project connecting nightlife, youth culture, urban inclusion, and cultural policy.
